Betting in Poker Games
Poker is an immensely popular group of card games that share a certain number of features. One of the things that makes poker unique among other card games and gambling games is poker's betting system. In poker, while there is an initial forced bet to get the ball rolling, it is the player's prerogative to continue betting or not. Usually, after this first bet, the hands are dealt according to what kind of poker variant is being played, and then the actions proceed clockwise -to the left- of the first player. Each subsequent player must put in an amount equal to the bet that had been previously made. The player is also allowed to raise the bet and place a larger amount into the pot.
Most of the time, during the final round of a poker game -which is also called a showdown- players are required to show their hands, and the winning hand takes the pot. What might be considered a winning hand varies from poker game to poker game; the winning hand can either be the low hand, the high hand, or the pot can be split between both. Either way, the perceived reward of continuing to contribute money to the pot in a game of poker is that the hand that a player holds stands a chance of winning that pot. If a player feels that their hand -or they themselves- will not win the pot, and no longer wish to put there money there, a player can opt to fold. When a person folds, they are no longer required to make any more bets, and the remaining money that they might have on hand won't go to the pot. At the same time though, in folding, a player essentially gives up any interest in winning the pot.
If all the players except for one player fold, the one remaining player gets to win the pot. This does not necessarily have to happen during the "showdown" round. This can occur in any round, as long as there is only one player left standing. This one remaining player can opt not to show their hand, since the other players are no longer in contention, which means that would be no other hands to oppose the one that the last remaining player could hold. At this point, if all of the other players fold, the last remaining player's hand is irrelevant; they have already won the pot.
